cciss and gnu parted

Hi has anyone had experience of using gnu parted with on a system with a CCISS controller? I've just been 'given' a compaq server with one of these (uses 2 x 18.4 gb disks) and have no experience of them. I need to reduce the size of one of the partitions to make way for a new partition of about 1 gb. I can get parted running, like this:

# parted /dev/cciss/

But if I try check my root partition for example:

(parted) check c0d0p6
Error: Unable to open /dev/cciss - unrecognised disk label.

Can anybody give me any pointers?

Cheers,

~James~
