Can't Write to External Hard Drive

I have two external hard drives, neither of which I can write to with SLED10SP1. No problem accessing files on the drives. The data shows as read only. I have attempted to change permissions on folders, files and the disk itself without success. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

Is the drive mounted read-only? issue the command 'mount' without parameters to see what's currently mounted.

Which file format? fat32? fat needs to be mounted rw,exec,uid=your UID, suid= your GID, umask=0000
