Cant start X server with XFree86 4.3 that followed with Red Hat 9

I recently tried to install Red Hat Linux 9 on a clean ext2 partition on my hard drive. Im going to run both Windows XP and Red Hat. I also have a swap partition.

But after my installation was complete, and i had checked that the istallation had probed the correct screen and graphic card (ATI Radeon 9700 Pro and an Dell M992 screen) it wouldnt start. I got into the "console" like mode and then it switched from black screen to a "login prompt". It did this a couple of times and then it said it couldnt start the X server, i checked the report but what i understood from it, it had some problem with my graphic card or that it coulndt find my monitor.

Then it asked me if i wanted to login as root and try again.
I logged in as root and it said it would try with a fresh configuration of my ATI Radeon 9700 Pro card. It then said it would try to restart the X server. But still didnt work. So now im locked into "console" like mode. I donno what to do cuz i actually dont know anything about linux. I dont know how to upgrade the X server (if thats needed) or change drivers...

I also tried to reinstall once.

If you need some more information to help me out just ask and i will see if i can give u the information u need.

All help is really appreciated!

Try "redhat-config-xfree86" at command prompt (with out quotte) after u login. And then try with different colour depth and resolutions. This utility can also be used to cahnge Drivers.
Hope this helps

Didnt work :/

Im afraid it didnt work. The only thing that happened when i typed that command with root access was the same as before when it asked me for my root password.

It said it would try with a fresh configuration with my ATI Radeon card and then it went black screen a couple of times and then I got the error message that it couldnt start the X server.

Same as before, and i coulndt see anything about changing color depth and resoulotion

But thanks alot for ur help!

All help is appreciated!

Question What do u mean?

Are u sure that u were loged in as a root at that time when u tried this command?
The screen will be like this after u loged in.

[root@localhost root]

Then u typ this command and it will popup a window in which Resolution and color depth menu will be shown. Click on advance tab and the option for Moniter and VGA card will be available there. First of all try with ur own detected card, if nothing happen then try with VESA driver.
What did u choose as a login type in installation procedure? I mean Text type or Graphical type?
If u chose text type login, just type "startx" without quotte after u login.
For more information about Redhat Linux installation, Getting started and costumisation see this Redhat Page and download guides on the format u like.
Hope this helps

You may have fixed this by now, but here is what you may have to do to fix this:

1. login as root in console mode
2. check to see if the radeon module is loaded (lsmod)
3. a. if it is not loaded try loading it (modprobe radeon?)
b. if it is loaded check your XFree86-4 file (probably in /etc/X11) and look for the graphics card section (it should be marked as the device section) see what driver the configuration program choose for you (probably either "radeon" or "ati")
4. if it choose "radeon" try "ati" or vice versa and then try "vesa"
5. if none of this works try getting the proprietary drivers from ati's website
http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/l...=11&submit.y=5

follow the directions on their site to set up the fglrx drivers (this is what I had to do on my debian box for a 9600SE card, with a 2.4.25 stock kernel)

NOTE: that this may or may not fix your problem (you may just have screen resolutions or hsync/vsync values that are wrong for you monitor)

see www.xfree86.org (particularly www.xfree86.org/help.html) for more info BEFORE attempting steps 3-5
