ok I read a few topics around mouses not working but haven't seen any solutions so I felt like making a topic myself. Ok here is my issue:
I have been using the touchpad for too long on this laptop and figured why not get a optical mouse and plug it in the usb port. Well i try hooking it up. Linux identfies it, even the light on the mouse turns on. BUT i can't move my cursor with this mouse. I can move it with my touch pad but can't with the mouse. I have been trynig to work things on ect/sysconfig editor in YaST but was confused and still even trying things out nothing work. I know I must be doing something wrong. Can anyone help me. Also I am using KDE 3.4 and SuSE 9.3 I am new with termials and command stuff so please be detail when explaining such. Thanks

There are probably several device nodes inside /dev/input/. You'll have to find out which one is your USB mouse.

one at a time, do the following. {Open a terminal}

cat /dev/input/mouse0
move your mouse around. If stuff appears on the screen, that is the device you want.
press ctrl+C to exit

repeat for mouse1, mouse2,mouse3 and so on.

When you which mouse you want, open the xorg.conf
vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Located the line that says /dev/input/mouse0 and change it to the correct mouse.
save , reboot, enjoy

I have made as you said and I found that my USB mouse is mouse3

so I opened /etc/X11/xorg.conf and here was the output of the file

I didnt find the line /dev/input/mouse0 to change it to mouse3

another thing, I tried the command cat /dev/input/mice and I found that the USB mouse is working fine !!

so any suggestions ??

change to what ??

whichever one outputs garbage when you type cat /dev/input/ {mouse3/mice} and then move your mouse
