cant get root access with cups

Hey everybody
I am trying to get my hp psc 1100 setup so I downloaded hpoj-0.9. I did the whole ./configure make make install and got to the poing where I ran ptal-init . Everything seems to work fine except that when I try tp run ptal-print <devname> I get an error saying I cant connect. Added to that when I try and use CUPS to configure the printer and it prompts me for a username and password. I use root and my password but I get an error saying I am not authorized. I have tried several times and i KNOW what my password is, in fact I try and login as root in a terminal and no problem.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Check your apache logs, some users I know experienced problems with CUPS when using long root passwords. Your situation might be different, but you will definitely know why it's refusing you access.

The default logfile is /var/log/apache/access.log

Re:cups

Hi,

- You have to configure cups by adding authorized users (not the defined users).

- If you use the KDE Management Utilities, it 'll allow you to configure some printers in graphical mode (use cups but don't ask user and passwd).

- With SuSE, I think it possible to configure the printer with Yast (never used this way).

I hope this will help you.

I have used YAST to configure the printer and it recgnizes it and I can print with it, but I cant scan. My box is one of those hp all in one printer, scanner, copiers. So I tried to manually configure it using the ptal-XXX utilities. When doing this is when I need ot use CUPS to access a web based utility. That is where I am having the problem
you mentioned that I need to add authorized users...how do I do that? How come none of the documentation says anything about it?
thanks
