Can't get my Edirol UA-25 USB soundcard configured right
Dear all,
I'm trying to set up my Edirol UA-25 USB sound card but I'm running into some problems. Here's what I'm using:
- Fedora 7 with latest kernel 2.6.23.14-64.fc7 and with the latest Planet CCRMA realtime kernel 2.6.22.10-1.rt9.1.fc7.ccrmart
- An Edirol UA-25 USB external sound card.
The problems are is that I can't get Jack to function properly, I just get tons of xruns with whatever configuration, either with the standard kernel as with the realtime kernel. Allthough the realtime kernel seems to bail out faster than the standard kernel.
I've tried disabling as many services as possible, running different WM's but I keep getting those xruns and with the realtime kernel there's a lot of crackling, also when using ALSA.
If anyone could be of any help I'd be grateful. Is it an idea to try another distro maybe? What's the current standard distro for audio applications? A lot of questions, I know. If any more info from my side is needed, just let me know.
Maroonbaboon, thanks for the reply! I already had the Wacky wiki bookmarked just like that particular Ubuntu forum thread. The HCL listing provides some new info which I think is faulty but I'll try 44.1 Khz and no advance mode (though that should work according to the ALSA wiki: http://alsa.opensrc.org/Edirol_UA-25)
I do have an AC97 onboard soundcard which I cannot disable in the bios as far as I know.
Hi all, hey (AutoStatic did you finally get this goin?),
this seemed the most recent post regarding Roland/Edirol UA-25 problems
with Linux so here goes:
UA-25 switches:
Advanced -> off
sample rate -> 44.1
limiter -> off
phantom rate +48V -> offP
lay/Rec -> Play
Digital in -> off
on a Asus P5B-Premium MB,...
as others have mentioned in all these beautiful settings/advice from so many links and so many forums ? -so what exactly did ya'll use (kernel/linux/drivers settings,....?...?)
but it still doesn't work for me ? -ouch. (BTW: in WinXP it works fantastic ? -sorry
-there is no sound "mixer" with freebsd/Linux installed (when onboard sound is disabled), which makes sense since this is a hardware/user controlled sound device.
However, using the Direct monitor vol. control and a mic I get sound,? -which maybe is only because of the audio loop-back that permits this. ? (because it gets power from USB circuit).
-Anyway, I'm no audiofile but this thing looked very promising as an all around audio/capture/midi/... card.
I bought it because according to "google" this would probably work fine (in unix/linux/BSD)."take google with a grain of salt you say" ?ya .
but umm, has anyone successfully got this Roland/Edirol device acually working successfully in anything except Windows?,
thats right! I'll use Atari if I have to, except for the fact that there is no USB -damn!
- is it one of my above switch settings?, do I need to ask this again on yet another 1000 linux forums ? (sorry).
-do I now need a specific ALSA driver port installed,...?
-becuase its an (ext) USB sound device I enabled/disabled my onboard sound card, but it still didn't matter. ?
sorry for so many questions, I'm no pro audiofile yet -just tryin to have fun.
thanks again.
good luck , and for gawd sakes let US all know(really HOW) if you got this chuggin' good.

----------------------------------------------
ok, well
Kubuntu 7.10 (with updates, including ALSA* patches/packages ...,) and I'm now getting somewhere.
I can now use amarok with this device (with above switch-settings) and it sounds great,
Note -> on-board sound controller was disabled in BIOS for this little test, however, this should mean that the onboard sound controller could be enabled simply as another device-similar to a Win setup ?
BUT, the 'ADVANCED" switch had to be off, maybe I need to set sample rate to 44.1 to play properly ?
(this could be because i'm playing an older Audio CD,... -not sure)
- I physically unplugged it(the usb ua-25) and yup just to make sure it was working, now need to look into the exact "advanced switch" parameters to see what it is doing,? anynway so far so good.
-they ain't kiddin' about "hardware/user" control -your "mixer" is the UA-25 ?! mmmm
Hi 63supercobrajet. Thanks for the reply! Recently PlanetCCRMA released a new kernel update (kernel-rt-2.6.24.2-1.rt1.3.fc7.ccrma.i686) and now the UA-25 works almost flawlessly. My current settings are:
UA-25
Advanced: on
Sample rate: 48
Limiter: off
Phantom: off
Digital in: off
Play/Rec: N/A (this switch is only applicable if you use a 96Khz sample rate)
Jack (out of my head, I'm not at home right now)
Priority: 70
Frames/Period: 128
Sample rate: 48000
Periods/buffer: 4
Port maximum: 128
Timeout: 1000
Realtime: on
Latency: 10.7 ms
Like I said, it works almost flawlessly. All the crackles are gone, so are the xruns. The only minor flaw is that when I'm using Guitar Rig 3 with wineasio and jack I have to move the Guitar Rig window to another workspace otherwise the sound quality is abominable and after a while Guitar Rig then crashes.
I'm about to test the UA-25 a bit further, I will post any findings here.

If you toggle the advance switch to off the device sets itself to a 44.1 sample rate. But you can toggle it on, should be supported.

Eeehhhm, yes, why'd you think it is called "Direct Monitoring"?

For me it works well now. The UA-25 is fully supported by Alsa, the only issue for me was realtime audio processing.

I have I remember when I first bought it almost 2 years ago, it worked already with Mandriva back then. What distro are you using right now?

No. Like I said, the UA-25 is fully supported by Alsa so any setting should work.

I have no idea what an Alsa driver port is, so I guess the answer to this is no.

It's not necessary, at least on my laptop it works with the onboard card enabled.
Thanks! for the help "AutoStatic",
right now you're way ahead of me
-I tried smaple rate 44.1 and toggle advanced back to "on" and u're right, it works great with a (Fedora 8)sound test.
/usr/bin/system-config-soundcard
btw, I am now trying to use Linux(again):
Fedora 8, (kernel 2.6.23.15-137) with latest (I think?) alsa drivers, with my above rig.
I'm just starting to look at jackd, ... ?
-the "...alsa freebsd driver port..." I previously mentioned is based on the FreeBSD/Unix ports system, but just ignore that confusion, I'm back to trying to use the ua-25 in Linux (alsa-linux-drivers) for now.
-We were gonna try Mandriva (I heard it was good) but that "Planet CCRMA" project you mentioned looks very interesting indeed.
-----------------------------------
Eventually, I want to setup the ua-25 on my buddy's Multimedia PC, we recently picked up a Shure(SM58) mic, and the next thing he'll be gettin' is a midi/synth keyboard - so he can record/play,...
anyway, thanks again 'n good luck, hopefully we'll talk again.
Nice to hear the UA-25 works! When using Mandriva, you should take a look at the enhanced RPMs of Thac and Zé: http://rpm.nyvalls.se/
At the moment I'm sticking with Fedora in conjunction with Planet CCRMA.
