canon ip4500 printer. how to establish bi-directional communication over samba

hello everyone.
im trying to setup my printer on the server machine running slackware linux 11 and be able to use it from my office network with win XP machines.

i have downloaded the linux drivers for the printer and tried printing already from command line in linux and from openOffice writer and it printed just fine.

now i set up samba with the following options:

Quote:
[global]
security = share
load printers = yes
printcap name = /etc/printcap

[printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /var/spool/samba
browseable = yes
use client driver = yes
# Set public = yes to allow user 'guest account' to print
public = yes
guest ok = yes
writable = yes
printable = yes
create mode = 0700

;[ip4500]
; path = /var/spool/samba
; printer name = IP4500
; writeable = yes
; public = yes
; printable = yes
; print command = lpr -r -h -P %p %s
security is not an issue yet - i just want to make sure im printing alright first.
so from winxp machine i can find the printer fine and print fine from (say) word 2007. it thows me a message saying that bi-directional comm is unavailable but it fades away and the printing commences and ends fine.

but it so happens the printer gives the option to print of cd/dvd surfaces using a specific disc tray. trying to print from that never commences.
from windows it is the case that when i tried to print on a dvd surface a couple of dialog boxes would pop up reminding me to make sure that the dvd surface is properly laid down of the disc printing bay etcetc. to these message i'd have to specific press 'ok' for the procedure to continue..
so im guessing the same is true now - ie the printer is sending this message to the linux machine but the pop up message never finds its way to the windows machine screen since bidirectional comms is not possible.

also when i tried installing the printer on the winxp machine and it found the printer on the network it said that the printer server was sending a WRONG printer driver to be installed on the winXP machine... and that i should manually find the proper driver from windows... and so i did... just thought to mention that...

any ideas how ill get the bi directional comms work on canon printers and perhaps specifically on this one?
have i set up samba properly? do i need the [ip4500] section?

thank you in advance for your help
nass
