Cannot install any Linux distribution due to hardware problem
 

Plz help people! I have been at this problem for over a day for my company :-(

I purchased a Gigabyte ga 965p ds4 motherboard and installed it perfectly and everything is recognised fine by the Bios. I initially tried fedora core 5 installation but get the message "unable to find any devices of the type needed for this installation type" few steps after the cd loads.

Then I tried centOs and I get the following message "Data for LiveCD not found. Are you using unsupported SCSI ? something went wrong and we can't continue booting"

I am using a maxtor diamondmax 17 160gb hdd and a sony dvd-rom drive. There is a onboard lan card and soundcard.

I tried different harddisks and different dvd/cd drives but get the above messages all the time.

Any suggestions/solutions guys? I am desperate!

Is the hard drive SATA or IDE? If it's IDE make sure it's jumpers are set to master and it's on the primary channel.

I have done the obvious already. The hardrives are IDE/Ata133. I checked even with other similar IDE hardrives.

I even tried other DVD rom drives however that gives the same errors.

On doing some research it seems the harddrive cannot be detected during install (it's detected fine in the bios). I phoned up Gigabyte tech support and the tech guy suggsted its to do with the harddrive controllers and I need to find the harddrive controllers for linux.

But it's strange as I used the same installation dvd with a similar hardware setup on another p.c. The only difference here is the motherboard. But the Gigabyte ga-965p-ds4 motherboard is relatively recent so I can't understand how that can the problem.

Any suggestions guys?

Linux lesson: NEVER tell the tech guy you're using Linux. Try putting in a Windows install disk, and see if that doesn't do the same thing. If you can get the tech guy to help solve the problem for a Windows install disk, it'll solve the Linux problem, too. I hate to say it, but you have a brand new PC that you put together yourself. Chances are, it's a hardware problem ... nothing to do with Linux.

I've tried a windows install and it works fine. The problem is installing Linux.

We've decided to order a SATA drive, hopefully that will solve the problem!

Hardly resisting not to throw this MS-inclined crap out of the window and get a new board.

Haven't tested/compiled kernel with it yet, probably will within the next few days.

Have you tried nother distro, it could be that the current release of the distro you are using is old now, try using another distro that is notorious for compatibility, try ubuntu or something and see if it works.
If is does then it's a problem with ur distro.
If not it could be faulty motherboard?
