Cannot connect internet E220 Huawei

Running Squeeze / Sid
This modem has been working fine, but recently (possibly after installing new packages) it has stopped communicating after a connection has been established.
I have tried 3 methods of connecting, all previously working, now not working: wvdia, Vodafone Mobile Connect and Network Manager.

Here are my findings:
versions
Code:
network manager 0.7.1-2
wvdialVersion: 1.60.1+nmu2
libc6Version: 2.9-27
ppp Version: 2.4.4rel-10.1
wvdial
Code:
--> local  IP address 41.7.77.81
--> pppd: $[08]@$[08]
--> remote IP address 10.64.64.64
--> pppd: $[08]@$[08]
--> primary   DNS address 196.207.40.167
--> pppd: $[08]@$[08]
--> secondary DNS address 196.207.40.165
--> pppd: $[08]@$[08]
--> pppd: $[08]@$[08]
--> Script /etc/ppp/ip-up run successful
--> Default route Ok.
--> warning, no nameserver found `/etc/resolv.conf`
--> Nameserver (DNS) failure, the connection may not work.
--> Connected... Press Ctrl-C to disconnect
--> pppd: $[08]@$[08]

Immediately after posting this I made 2 discoveries that warrant an edit. Firstly the DNS server is not valid as I tried this from a working connection. That led me to suspect the ping and try another server, I tried the IP for google.com and this is good, so it looks like a DNS issue.

So the first question is why is DNS not working and what caused the failure?

Marking this as solved. I entered the DNS for vodacom manually. Not sure why I need to do this now after it has been working, may investigate later, but for now that is my solution.

As a guess, pppd overwrites (actually, manages a stack of) /etc/resolv.conf files and if pppd does not shut down/restart cleanly, then you could easily get a 'bad' resolv.conf.

thanks for that, I was actually looking at this file this morning. Just checking in /etc/resolv.conf it has the 2 entries that I manually entered in the vodacom application. It is curious that I need to enter this manually now. This also applies with network-mangager and wvdial
