cannot activate network device

hi!
i have just bought a used computer with an empty hard disk and installed Fedora Core 6. everything seems to be working fine except for the internet connection. when i look in the network configuration, the hardware is recognized by the system but it is inactive.
the device is a "Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8001 Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 13)"

i have istalled fedora6 on my other computer and the internet connection is working fine on that one. the device on that computer is a "Silicon Integrated Systems PCI fast ethernet"

is the problem that the driver of the Marvell is missing? is an ethernet controller the same thing as a PCI fast ethernet?
i tried to install a driver that i downloaded from the marvell homepage, but i failed and the istaller suggested that i installed "header files" or something like that.

anybody can give me a hand? i would be very grateful.

a script follows with some information about my computer.

cheers,
Federico

hi!
i'm still trying to install the driver. i made a step ahead but the installer is now giving me the following output:

Check kernel header version (not recognized) [ warn ]
Check firmware availability (not available) [ OK ]
Check kernel functions (Changed: nothing) [ OK ]
Compile the kernel (error) [ failed ]

An error has occurred during the compile proces which prevented the installation from completing.
Take a look at the log file install.log for more informations.
Installation of sk98lin driver module failed.

this is the content of the install.log file:

Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8001 Gigabit Ethernet Controller

You probably don't have support in the kernel for that network device. You'll have to either compile support for it into the kernel or load a module in one of your startup scripts. If you can find support for it. I don't see that device in the HCL http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/index.php/cat/10

If not use another supported device.

What is the output to as root
Code:
ifconfig
I see that you are trying to compile support into the kernel. Do you have Fedora's kernel sources installed?

Cool

We're trying to help YOU. If YOU can use "ifconfig" in a terminal, please let us know the output. The readout will list, usually in two paragraghs the data. Or YOU can try to purchase for $5.00 on the internet...3COM Ethernet card...like 3C905b or similar. Most are older cards 10/100 Mbps, but not 10/100/1000Mbps. They have the 3COM drivers in most all Linux Distros. My Distro is BLAG 6000, with Fedora Core 6 Base and Kernel 2.6.18.1. Includes the 3COM drivers too. There are other Distros that have the Marvel drivers. YOU decide; keep FC6 which is awesome, or try other Distros. The other Distros will also have things YOU like and hardware refiguring.
