Can not get mouse to work in X

I am using VMWare to install Slackware 10.1 as a guest OS. Windows XP is the host OS.

I have Slackware up and running with no problem at least with the console. GPM seems to run fine as my mouse cursor works fine. When I do 'startx' however, my cursor goes crazy and doesn't move. In fact it goes up to the upper right hand corner and stays only moving occasionally. Then I can't get out of X to go back to the console. If I do ctrl-alt-backspace, it crashes hard and i have to do a cold reboot.

I tried to restart gpm with: gpm -m /dev/input/mice -t imps2 and it says no device. Does anyone know what I need to do to get this running correctly?

Thanks,

Harlin

the problem isnt in the gpm, is in the xorg configuration.

U should put

Protocol "ImPS/2"

in the /etc/xorg.conf

Or U can try

xorgcfg
