Can I use a firewall DV camcorder as a webcam?

Hello,

I have no specific problem, just a question about Firewire.

I bought a "cheap" 40$ USB webcam yesterday. It's not working on Linux as it has no drivers for it. (Well, it has drivers for Windows, but I can't say it's much better!)

On a P4 computer I had before, I had a ATI Radeon 8500DV with a Firewire port. I was able to plug in my JVC DV camcorder with the Firewire cable and use the camera as a webcam on MSN Messenger and some other programs.

I'm wondering, if I get my money back for my webcam tomorrow and buy a 1 or 2-port Firewire port, which is about the same price, will I be able to do the same? I mean, use my camcorder as a webcam via Firewire? Is it possible?

I suppose the IEEE1934 port will also allow me to do video editing, which is also something I want to do.

I have Red Hat 9 with the 2.4.20-8 kernel.

Thanks!
