Too bad PC's don't come with serial ports anymore. I know exactly what your problem is. It happens to me a few times a year that I have to drag the KV combo to my server rack at home. The last time because I accidentally issued this stupid command in the wrong terminal window on the DHCP server itself:
Code:
dhclient eth0
.

That precludes any use of SSH, really.

I have been considering to install a known good VM host and never touch it, while installing my regular server on top of that. I think it would avoid 80% of dragging around the keyboard and monitor. It does not solve all problems, though. Booting the VM host and having a kernel panic due to an inaccessible hard drive and such. Upgrading the VM host while hosting a live system is obviously discouraged. And I don't know what the performance penalty would be.

With small embedded devices (e.g., Soekris et al.) or enterprise-grade gear, there is always serial or IPMI to access regardless of network availability. Your typical PC is envisioned as a desktop, not a server.

Some mobos still have serial headers (COM ports) but you have to put in a cable and plate yourself. I was surprised to learn this and find that at least one relatively recent ASUS I own has this.

raindog308 you are right. I never realized it. One of my most recent (fanless) desktop computers comes with a Asus H81T mainboard which has a serial port on-board. It is not connected to one of the rear connectors, though.

One of my servers is built with a Supermicro X7SPA-H-D525 Motherboard. It comes with serial I/O on board, and one of them is connected to the rear. I have mounted this mainboard in a 1U Supermicro rackmount case.
