Can I do DVD+R DL?

Recently I purchased a new DVD burner for a computer that I'm going to set up with Slackware Linux as a DVR (like a TiVo or something). This DVD burner has something called "DVD+R DL" (the DL is for double layer) which is supposed to burn in two different layers and give me up to 4 hours of MPEG2 video or 8.5GB of data.

I was wondering two things:
1. Will I have to buy special DVDs to take advantage of this "double-layer" feature or can I just use regular DVD+R discs?
2. Can I burn one of these "double-layer" DVDs with the standard burning software?

Thanks in advance!

1) You need double layer discs
2) If you consider dvd+rw-tools standard, you need version >= 5.20.4.10.8 of it

Okay - thank you! I didn't think you could burn regular DVD+Rs as DL, but I wanted to make sure.
