Can get sound from laptop speakers but not from headphones

hi,

I am having a weird problem. I am able to get perfect sound from my laptop (Dell Inspiron 5150) speakers but when i plugin my headphones in the headphone jack i dont get any sound at all. My headphone is working perfectly fine...I double checked it
I have Fedora Core with its 2.4.22 kernel. I recently updated the kernel to 2.6.2
Now the funny part is the no headphone sound happens only when i boot into 2.6.2 while i get proper sound both from headphones and speakers when in 2.4.22

wot might be wrong ??

thanks!
Rohit

Check all volume levels. Get yourself the alsa-lib and alsa-utils packages and build them. In there is a volume control program called alsamixer. Probably your "headphone" volume level is muted and/or set to low/zero.

Check to see if you have a program called kmix. If you do open it up and go to the headphones icon click the green dot so the light is on, then turn the volume slider below it up to its max setting.

perfect!!
i installed alsa-utils package. as u had said headphone was mute in alsamixer. thanks!!
i saw in kmix too but there is no headphone icon..is it normally there but not there in my case ??

1 more thing i observed in kmix -> help -> hardware info ->
it says ... sound drivers supported : OSS
sound drivers used : OSS
does that mean that kmix is not using alsa or i am not using alsa ?? (alsamixer unmuted the headphone though)

thanks again!!

Yeah most mixers are OSS based. The only ALSA mixers I know of are the ones that come from ALSA. The OSS ones will actually affect your sound levels to some degree but not all volume levels will be controllable.
