Can Anyone Explain This?

Mandrake 8.2 XFree86 4.20 Also FreeBSD 4.5 with Xfree86 4.20
Why does disconnecting the Video Inputs and Output from my ATI AIW 128 Pro 32mb AGP video card solve the problem of "startx" and my monitor screen goes black into standby/power saving mode? I've been trying to solve this problem for weeks and have tried in the past also before giving up. In my hours of searching via Google for the solution to the Monitor blacking out when starting X in Linux with XFree 4.20 I came across a post from somewhere (don't recall now)that unhooking the Video In/Outs changes something when X boots up.
To my surprise this person was correct! I have no idea why this would be so.My XFree log file only shows two error/warning messages: "useccefor2d" nor being used and no DFP detected which don't apply to my system. All drivers/modules are loaded properly, the exact card chipset is detected.I did notice also that the log file even showing that it found the S-Video port.
Can anyone explain this to me? Now that I can get into a GUI > is the next step going to Gatos and trying to install their drivers?
This is nuts!

Updated Info

From a couple of replies elsewhere I hooked up the Cable In connector and the S-Video in connector but not the TV Out connector. Am able to get into a GUI with "startx" without a problem. From this > obviously the problems lies with having the Video Out connector hooked up. Why this is I hope someone can explain this. Thank's- Tuzinor

I don't fully understand your situation, but it looks like there is a problem with starting X when there are 2 outputs possible. When there's one it starts OK. Am I right?

Tuzinor, Thank you _so_ much for posting this information here! I have been trying to get X to work for me and my ati aiw 128 pro for weeks and all I had to do was disconnect the svideo out connector!

Glad to help > you have no idea how much time I wasted on this till I finally came across the post with that info.

Have you found a real solution for this problem, or do you just not use the svideo out anymore?

My guess would be that when a cable is connected to the S-Video port that the card switches it rendering to handle it, screen refresh would be much slower out of the S-Video port, and that the X drivers are working in VGA or VESA. Just a guess, I would have to have the shematics and white papers for the chips to know for sure.

Thought I'd provide a little more information here since I've learned more about S-Video in the recent past.

In helping a friend install a home theater, we had a heck of a time getting everything to work together. As it turns out, S-Video is not the least bit compatible with other formats of video, so if one component is processing and transmitting/receiving on the S-Video channel, the rest of the components have to be using S-Video also. In other words, having a DVD-player and an X-Box hooked up to his tuner, they either must both or neither be using S-Video, and the connection going to the TV has to be either matching S-Video or another format (such as component or RCA...which mix and match just fine.)

This was discovered after about 3 hours of grinding my teeth and sending my buddie back to Best Buy to exchange the first tuner because I figured it must be defective. (as side note, the manual DID mention this conflict, but didn't spell it out very clearly, so we just didn't get it.)

Hope this helps,

Mike
