Exclamation can't print!

i built a linux from scratch machine (latest and greatest ;-))

i have cups 1.1.19 installed

i have gimp-print 4.3.21 installed

i have ghostscript 7.07 installed

my printer is an epson stylus color 777 on the parallel port

i can send plain text to the printer from the command line and get it printed out. cups also can work if i use the raw print driver. but, obviously, this is limited. grin.

when i choose any other print driver, nothing happens when i give the print command.

in the cups admin (localhost:631) the job shows up in the cue as cancelled. when i try and restart the job i get an error message:

client-error-not-possible

any ideas out there?
