Can't install Intel(R) Pro/100 VE Network Card

Hello, I've browsed the forums for simmilar problems and I see a few but none seem to have been solved.. The problem I am having is installing/using/getting linux to recognize my Intel(R) Pro/100 VE network card: -support.intel.com/support/network/adapter/pro100/pro100ve/)
(This is the name of the device as recognized in WINXP)

I tried downloading and following the instructions for the linux drivers for this hardware from Intel.
downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=407&OSFullName=Linux*&lang=eng&strOSs=39&submit=Go%21

I have also tried the driver from sourceforge.net:
sourceforge.net/projects/e1000/

I follow the instructions, > make install and recieve the message that linux cannot find it's source (this happens with both drivers) I then browse to the directory it outputs to ( /lib/modules/<KERNEL VERSION>/kernel/drivers/net/e1000/e1000.[k]o ) the file is there. I then use modprobe e1000 and hit enter, and it just displays another blank line waiting for my prompt. After this, is there something else I am supposed to do to have linux use the hardware?

I am very very new to linux, and would like to get on the internet to understand it better. My computer specs are as follows:
