Cable Internet Anyone?

Hello!

I thought I'd be smart and install on my friend's computer linux. Internet connection wouldn't be so hard, I thought.

But he has cable-internet and that doesn't work any DSL shell scripts etc.

I never dealt with cable connections before.

Any suggestions?

How is the cable connected - usb or ethernet? Do you need to enter static IP details (DNS, etc) or not? Does it require a password? Which distro is it on?

here are the details:

uses ethernet
distro = Slackware
requires password
DNS, I'm not sure if required

It worked fine on the Windows 98 PPP program.

Do you have the PPoE program installed? I have cable ethernet at home, I simply use the ethernet cable and tell my box to use DHCP - I have NTLWorld, for reference.

I have Ranging Penuin installed (rp-pppoe)

What am I doing wrong? (I can't afford to let down the entire Linux community)

Do you have the settings/instructions that would be used under Windows? The principles are the same - if you need to input your DNS/IP settings in Windows, you will need to do it under Linux.

The RP-DSL script only asks me for my DNS server address and the script gives me a TIME OUT error and terminates.

Does a ADSL script work for Cable as well?

What do you use?

I use nothing at all. In netconfig, I give my hostname (pc name - this is optional) and domain name (optional), tell it to use DHCP and I'm away.

Could you post the results of ifconfig and route -n - you will need to be root to do this (use su).
