C-Media 8788:: works in SUPERTUX, not in DESKTOP

"05:06.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc Unknown device 8788"

from /sbin/lspci

openSUSE 10.2 (x86_x64) - 2.6.18.8-0.1-default kernel

I have just recently installed a new sound card into my system- the HT Omega Claro card, which uses the C-Media 8788 chip.

I can't get ALSA or YaST to recognize the card, so I have no sound in the desktop, but when I start Supertux, I have sound!

I did install the latest OSS driver yesterday because ALSA (1.0.13) wasn't working, but I couldn't find any way to configure it so I gave up on it.

I have also tried to set the soundsystem to OSS in settings->sound & multimedia->sound system, but I still get no sound on the desktop.

Why does supertux have sound, and my desktop doesn't? How can I get my desktop (and everything else) to have sound as well?

I found an OSS folder with 4 empty files - one of them is named CMI87880 - so I guess OSS recognizes my sound card...but for some reason it won't work in the desktop. (and I still can't find any way to configure OSS)
