Buying a large USB hard drive

I am using Fedora and want to buy a large hard drive (250 GB) for backups. I am thinking of an external USB 2.0 connection so I can attach it to my desktop machine or my laptop.

Has anyone had any experience with USB hard drives on Linux?

I've a small (20Gb) Iomega USB 2.0 portable hard drive and Mandrake 9.1 picks it up and uses it no problem. You have to plug it in before you boot though. At least, I think you do. I'm not going to test that. Good luck.
