I just tested exporting the VM on the running desktop box and import it to the old spare desktop. It worked nicely after upgrading Guest Addition.

You're welcome -- glad to hear the export+import process works. It's an odd decision by Oracle, in my opinion, to require an export and import as it makes backing up VMs a lengthy process. I tried exporting all my VMs as one export but that didn't seem to work so I think it's safer exporting VMs individually even if it takes longer.
