Hello fellow users,
I am building a computer in a couple of months, I don't want to ramble on about the specs like getting a mobo with SLI. I am only curious about the GPU. I am buying this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814143172

I don't want to buy the second GPU right now but maybe in a year or so when the price drops. My question is that when I am ready to buy another GPU for use in SLI, does the card have to be exactly the same name like asus, evga, etc and the same model# for it to work properly in SLI?

From what I read about SLI is that the model of each card in SLI have to be the same model. The brand that constructed the cards can be different. The core speed and memory speed of each card will be equally be set. This means cards set in SLI will be clocked to the slowest card.

Using SLI in Linux will be a different story. SLI is not reliable. Also it may not work for all programs in Linux. IMHO, do not waste your money on SLI.

Thanks for the info electro. So the important thing is to have the same model like geforce gtx 285, and also core and memory speed to be the same to have equal speed in SLI? Actually the computer will have a win/linux dual boot. Win will be used mainly for games.

Were I you I would think that that card is more than adequate considering the quality of the linux drivers delivered by Nvidia. My belief would be that SLI in its present form will be quickly superseded by the next generation of cards with two GPUs per card or a new,faster interface.

I think that by buying one card I would in fact be buying more real graphics performance for the price. This choice is in view of the fact that chasing the best video specifications is expensive and may not lead to any result that can be seen on the screen or to a technology that will be persued in the future.
