Brother MFC-7420 Prints, but scanner USB addresses conflict

Linux Mint 15 Cinnamon, ASUS K54C Laptop. I have followed Mint and Brother installations exactly more than once, but Xsane can't scan (. .invalid argument.) Xsane reports different USB data than lsusb. I've read many many posts.

lsusb: Bus 003, Dev 003 MFC 7420
Scanimage -L Bus 002, Dev 003 MFC 7420
sane-find-scanner: USB scanner not found.
Xsane upon loading: Bus 002, Dev 003.

Bus 2, Dev 3 does not exist in the file structure at /dev/bus/usb/ (Bus 003, Dev 003 does exist.)

last lines of dmesg:

[ 243.641492] usb 3-1.2: usbfs: interface 0 claimed by usblp while 'xsane' sets config #1
[ 243.641546] usb 3-1.2: usbfs: process 2422 (xsane) did not claim interface 1 before use

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Brscan2 and xsane to no avail.

The unit works fine via usb in Win7 dual boot same machine.

This unit is a Brother 2 unit. I also run a Brother 3 MFC at another location with this same machine. It is a wifi network setup and works fine.

What am I missing?

try:

- not sure what brscan is.. but try another software (scanning prog) other than xsane (related). in Linux try litescan or simpleskan (spelling may be diff).

- make sure you install the SCANNING part of your printer SEPARATELY (ie, just installing the printer properly.. will sometimes NOT be enuff.

- not sure cups has anything to do with scanning.. but it may actually interfere (if it's not installed properly).. and the last few years has seen cups goto hell alot (now that Steves gone to heaven... there's no telling where Apple related stuff will wind up

- uninstalling the printer part-- again.. if this is one of those 'all-in-one' doohickeys.. and try installing JUST the scanner FIRST.
