Brother HL- 2240 works on Dell Vostro not on HP mini 1000
My Dell Vostro drives my HL-2240 after a normal setup.
The setup on my HP mini went exactly the same but would not print the test page or anything else. The HP recognizes the printer. Any ideas? I'm using ubuntu 1010.
You need to do a little problem determination. It is also not clear from your post where the HL 2240 is connected, or how it is connected.
What you need on both systems for starters is , cups, the driver for the HL2240 printer. Then install the printer. Personally I do not like the way buntu does things. I always use the cups interface, never a wizard. If you do not understand what I just said, open a web browser, type http://localhost:631 and press enter. That will connect you to cups. To add a printer, look for the option to add a printer. You will need the root password. Add it. Then test print. It should work, if you have selected the correct driver.
I have a HP mini, with buntu, 10.04, it prints to my HL2040 attached to my desktop. It dual boots, Mandriva and Slackware. It will print to the remote printer, attached to the desktop.
Please clarify the physical connection, which system, type - usb, parallel port, etc.
On both machines I connect the printer to the usb port.
CUPS recognized the HL-2240 then it asked me to choose the model from
a list. It did not have the 2240 listed. 2170 and 2400 had nothing
in between. Just turned the printer around and on the back it says
the model is HL-22, that that is not in the CUPS list either.
Just remembered that the linux system used HL2170W so I tried using that
with CUPS but it still won't work. I clicked on the button for viewing
completed jobs and the asked for job was listed.

There are instructions for the lpr driver and cupswrapper driver. I have a HL2040, it needs both installed also. Install them, then add the printer in cups. You should be good to go.
I went to the brother site and downloaded the lpr driver and cupswrapper
driver in the deb format and installed them. I then went to the CUPS site
and downloaded the HL-2170W driver. Tried printing and got the same result.
The system still thinks the print job is complete.
Why was there no trouble with the Dell Vostro loaded with the same version of
ubuntu? Does that say there is some hardware difference with the two machines?
By the way it also works on my Windows desktop.
I very much dought this is a hardware problem. You can always do a 'lsusb' on both systems, and see if the info is the same, it should be.
Not sure why you feel the need to plug the printer into the netbook. If you have cups and the drivers on both systems, and the printer correctly configured, it will print from both. One acts a print server, the other a client for remote printing.
When I delete the current copy of the driver and reinstall, the computer
recognizes that the 2240 is connected and suggests the 2170W driver,
the list does not include a 2240 driver. The installation proceeds
just like it did with the Dell Vostro. When I ask it to print, it
proceeds just like the vostro except the printer ready light
blinks only once and there is no physical print. The HP computer
then says the job is complete.
I use the HP machine as my main computer (+ external monitor and keyboard)
and very seldom use the other two machines. The vostro is used as
a book reader and the desktop is a Windows machine used only as backup,
so I need the printer connected to the HP.

Problem solution or not, I really appreciate your spending
time on this. At least I'm learning some new things.
There is something wrong with the driver install if you are not seeing the 2240 driver. Using a different driver, 2170w isn't working.
I never asked you exactly what distro you are running, I was guessing by the Ubuntu symbol that was it. Is that correct? Is it a 64 bit version, or 32 bit version?
There are pre-req's for the 64 bit version, that are not installed by the driver.
Form the install instructions...

ia32-libs or lib32stdc++ is required to be installed.
If you have a 64 bit version, go into Synaptics, type the name of the libs above, and see it they are installed, if not install them.
How are you configuring the printer? Through the cups interface, or the wizard Ubuntu supplies?
Just in case the 10.10 running my computer is corrupt, I booted from my 10.10 disk and
the computer ran the printer with no problem. Now to reinstall. Many, many thanks for
your help, I learned a lot.
