I reinstalled those packages. there still is no usb interface under devices in the cups interface. Also, the printer still won't show up as a local printer under add a printer

Same problem here, with a Samsung ML-1740.

The printer is recognized by the backend ( running /usr/lib/cups/backends-available/usb lists it), but lpinfo -v doesn't.

Suggestions welcome.

solution to usb printer detection under Feisty

For me it helped to enter:

sudo adduser cupsys plugdev

Related ubuntu Feisty bug:

Thanks for That worked perfectly on a MEPIS system - I had previously had the DCP110C working under KUBUNTU Feisty but for some reason couldn't get it working under MEPIS. I did uninstall the DCP lpd and CUPS packages using KPACKAGE, before following all these steps very carefully. Greg
