Boot system while RAID5 drive is rebuilding?

Hi,

I have a PowerEdge SC1420 with a CERC SATA 1.5 Controller installed. I have 4 250GB drives configured with RAID5.

One of the drives failed, I shutdown the system, and replaced the drive.

Via the BIOS Array config utility, I formatted the newly installed drive, then rescanned the drives. The rebuild of the drive started automatically an is slowly rebuilding.

My question is, can I boot the system, without affecting the drive rebuild, and bring the system back on-line for users to access?

Just typing that sounds like it is not a good idea...

Rebuild has advanced ~ 3% in a hour...

You're right. It's not a good idea. You can't do it. In order to get past the rebuild, you'd probably have to hit CTL-C or something like that, which would stop the rebuild. Just let it finish. This is probably the biggest issue with motherboard arrays: you have to go completely offline to do any repairs.
