boot drive changes from hd0 to hd4 to hd1 - computer won't boot
The Ubuntu installer think my /boot partition is (hd0,0). This is what it writes into grub menu.lst. My computer won't boot after install completes.
The Ubuntu live CD shows this boot partition is (hd4,0) (sde1). But that doesn't work and after editing grub menu.lst to (hd4,0), the computer still won't boot.
Some searching at the grub command line show the correct value is actually (hd1,0).

The Ubuntu installer assumes that youŕe boot device is (HD0,0) unless
you change it.
After deciding on with drive to install it comes with a next window
one of the option there is called Advance or something like that here
you can change the boot device.
If have you more HD it is important how the HDs order where during installation.
If you have change it we now have to change the drive mapping too so
what is the outcome of the command Fdisk -l (L lower case)
Hi - thanks for your reply. I plan on attaching the fdisk info (and other info) from both the installer environment AND from the installed system (after it is booted with a grub floppy disk).
I am stuck at trying to get blkid output from the installer environment. I booted with the alternate CD (Intrepid amd64) went into rescue mode and got a command shell.
blkid is not found
so I tried this:

apt-get install e2fsprogs
the result is:

/bin/sh: apt-get: not found
As far as I know, without the output of blkid and fdisk from both the installer environment and the installed system, it will be hard to figure out what the problem is...
can you suggest an alternative to blkid in the installer environment?
