Bios died
 

Hello I am using an nForce2 chipset mainboard from asus, the a7n8x-e, after replacing my ram i turned on my computer and hit the pause button on the keyboard to halt it (the comp) so i could find the memtest cd. when i found it i tried to insert the disc into the drive but it wouldn't open so i hit esc to make the computer continue but it did nothing. So now when I turn it on all that happens is I get a black screen and the fans turning on and then no more activity. Any one have any Idea what is going on? I think its the bios. nForce2 main boards write to the bios at start up and i think i may have killed it by turning it off at that time.

well first of all, try to remove the RAM, you never know...
Then, some boards will reset default BIOS config if you start it several time (so turn off, turn on, turn off, turn on 'til you get something).

If this doesnt work and that the BIOS is really dead, there is not much to do... take a look at your warranty, your MB worth no more than a giant book holder now.

Go back to the old RAM and see if that works. Be sure to touch the metal case before touching the RAM. Static electricity can damage your motherboard.

The BIOS configuration settings might of been scrambled. Try clearing by either removing the battery or shorting the battery jumper pins. See your motherboard manual for details.

It is unlikely that you damaged the BIOS flash ROM but strange things can occur.

Ok, sorry for not mentioning immediatly (in first post).
i went back to the original ram which worked fine, nothing worked. I also tried taking out the batter using the bios reset jumper that didn't help. However I did think of something else that may be interesting. does the bios affect how the cd rom opens? because my cdrom wouldn't open. At the moment i ordered a bios chip from bios man for 25$. A little expensive but less than a new mainboard. I think my old bios chip is intact so i am going to try to do a hot flash on it when i recieve my new bios chip. Hopefully the new bios chip will work so i can actually do the hot flash. So anyway back to the wierd thing about the cd rom, can the bios affect whether it opens or not, mine didn't open (i checked all the cables).

The BIOS should not affect the CD as long as it gets power you should be able to open the drive. The first thing I would do is go back to the basics and disconnect everything in the case and just leave your floppy, video card and a single stick of ram in the computer and see if it boots that way. If it does the start adding back the parts one piece at a time rebooting between each success and adding a single new part. If it does not boot in a bare configuration then you should remove and reseat the CPU just to make sure it has not managed to come loose doing the same with the power cable wouldn't hurt either.
