Question Bios detects HDD but fails to 'use' it

trying to use very old pc 166 mhz, penthium mmx, 64 MB,
originally it had a 1.5 G HDD

to display slides for an exhibition

i connected everything , got the hdd as primary master hdd , still have to check cdrom, but i can boot from it

Question is what can i fix the bios 'primary hdd fail'

in hdd detection i choose the hdd which is a Seagate 3.2 Gig HDD which i blanked with DBAN

I believe this is not the rite place to post this questions , had no options

i tried puppy which installs fast and totally into ram

but i can't use the cdrom , have another cdrom but no wires

that's why i wanted to use this hdd

any suggestions

Drive

Did you run the DBAN on the drive on that computer?

Check and see if the bios supports LBA. If not you might have to try and get an optional configuration from the manufaturer's website, top of drive, or from the manual.

If the Drive was formated on a newer system is may not be in a compatible format with the current setup (although this shouldn't give the bios error).

Also try using the manual configuration in the bios and entering the hard drive specs manually. Usually on the top of the drive (sectors and such). The drive might have a single setting, that would the setting you would need instead of master if its available.

Possibly Slax Popcorn edition

http://www.slax.org/download.php

is the xorg file set up to use vesa?

I havent used puppy or feather, but I know slax has always been able to work properly on older hardware using vesa for me. let me know if it works if you try it

puppy runs has no trouble with that (only keyboard problem , but is the keyboard itself), and i found out what the configuration was with dyne (want to use it because i can use the mouse connection for another keyboard and it works only with 2.4.2.),

but i will give slax a try , see what happens there

OOOh, and i like the server edition , gonna transform the old box in a 'surfstation'

many thnx Kahless
