Better Scanning Experience

Dear friends,
I have a very old HP ScanJet 3200C scanner. It is just a renamed Umax Astra 1200P. The issue is very poor scan quality. In Windows98, when using the HP IntelliScan software, the output is very good with exact colour match. One drawback therein is, after three or more scannings, the output will be overshadowed by an yellowish foreground due to dust and age. In Debian Linux, with Kooka I have no such yellowish shadings. However, the scanned image is excessively dark and completely lacking red and green colours. In the Help for SANE, they have advised to change the parameters such as RGB Gain, Offset, etc by editing the corresponding configuration file i.e. 'umax_pp.conf'. Unfortunately, it has no effect. Now, please advise me on two things. First, whether the scan quality can be improved. Second, if you have newer scanners, how is the quality?
Thanks in advance
Allwyn

Sorry, I can't help you with your scanner.
I use a Canon LIDE 30 and it works quite well (except of the BW mode though).
Under Windows the results are slightly better, but you must look very close to see the difference.

Thanks anutosho for the reply. Now I am clear that my scanner is the problem.
