Best wireless router

Hi all, looking for some advice, I have just bought a new Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop, which comes with XP I have used Linux (Madrake 8.1 thru 10.1 then Ubuntu 5.04 and 5.10) with dial up with great success for about 5 years. I have recently upgraded to broadband and my free modem was a USB ADSL type which neither eciadsl or the other driver (can't remember what its called) work. I have been advised to get either an eithernet ADSL modem or a router. The laptop is wireless capable and I would like to take this route.

Can anyone advise which would be the best wireless router to go for, I have the ability to pick either Ubuntu, Mandriva 2006, Suze 10.0 as I have the DVDs or with XP and my broadband download any other flavour, if it would be easier. My preference would be Ubuntu.

I am willing to put a bit of work into this, and have a reasonable knowledge of how to compile from source etc (though have never managed to successfully re-compile a kernel) but would try if required.

Thanks

Are you asking about wireless routers, or which distro to install on your laptop. Make sure you get a NAT router. It will supply you with some protection. I use a Linksys wireless Cable/DSL router and I am happy with it.

Be sure to use WPA. WEP is only good to prevent someone from accidentally connecting to your network.

Most or all wireless routers will use a web interface, so all you need is a web browser to configure them. Make sure that the one you get supports WPA. Unless you buy an old one at a flee market, it probably would.

If you get the same brand of router as your wireless card, that should guarantee that they work together flawlessly.

Make sure that the router you get is a NAT router. It may actually be difficult finding one that isn't.
