Did you see what the transmit power was on the Asus unit? The engenius is 28db(600mW).

Asus has internal antenna, engenius external(or attach better one).

Did not see which chipset it was using (determines recieve sensitivity).

Bang for the buck, I would give it a try.

I could not find this info (neither on the page on the Asus site that I had linked in my previous post nor on the NewEgg page for the product.)

I wonder just how much of a difference the antenna can make.

A recent review of the Asus product at NewEgg underscored a concern I had all along about this type of product in general: that those of us with little networking knowledge and experience may find ourselves in over our heads.

I do appreciate all the info you've provided, though, and will certainly keep it in mind.
