Backup Fedora Core 5 and WinXP to external hard drive?

Noob question - I have a Fedora core desktop with a 100Gb drive in it and a WinXP laptop, currently connected with a ZyXel wireless router.

Where should I start looking to find a device that I can use to backup both of these computers? I'm willing to learn. Can a typical SOHO external HD (Western Digital, Cavalry, etc.) be set up to do this? Is this a Samba or NFS issue?

Sorry for the vagueness - any suggestions welcome.
