AX.25 interfacing


Hi everyone I am doing a proyect using AX.25, IŽll soon have a blog to post everything related to it.
Basicly I wanted to recieve data like and ID, and Some NMEA sentences.
But I dont understand to much AX.25 yet, so I wanted to know this: Can I write a program that uses the AX.25 functions?
I mean I am writting a program that needs to recibe using a soundmodem and a VHF, basicly the NMEA string. Can I do that... becase AX.25 seems to be a term software. Did anyone understood O i better refrase?
