Award Bios Post code 52

Hello all,

Trying to build a new box here. Ive got chaintech 7NJL6 motherboard, phoenix award bios v6.00PG, AMD duron 950 proc and 1 stick 256 MB ram and one 512 stick of ram.

After applying power, POST test seems allright:
Code:
Main Processor : AMD Duron(tm) 1266MHz
Memory Testing : 786432K OK
and a single short beep which means success does it not?

But now on the right of the screen I see:

Post Code
52

in a box, and the computer is frozen. No entering setup, no ctrl alt delete, just frozen.

After hours of searching pheonix website for post codes I find this:
http://www.phoenix.com/NR/rdonlyres/...ardgeneric.pdf
Quote:
52 Initialize
Option Rom

Initialize any option ROMs present from
C8000h to EFFFFh
I don't know what this means. I have swapped out the ram using each one seperately but always it reports correct amount but still freezes.

I have an nvidia agp card installed that I swapped out from another box where it worked fine, only in here for what was supposed to be the install, as this box is for a server. I don't think this is the problem.

Also, I unplugged all ide channels and plugged back in one at a time, never any change.

I don't have a floppy drive installed. In this day and age could there be a bios so crappy that it quits without a floppy hooked up?

Any ideas would be great.

Yeah, ok. Like always I solved my own problem 5 minutes after posting. Seems there is a jumper on the mobo to turn FSB down to 100, which is needed for this old duron. Thought it was all done in the bios these days...

Hey, I still have the link you posted in my email notification, looks like good info. I'll book mark it for later, but for now, time to install Linux!

Thanks for your reply...

Most motherboard manufactures has switched to software based setups but not all I guess. Though jumper based motherboards are more reliable than software based motherboards. I have motherboards that I can select either using the software to automatically set the FSB or I can set the FSB by a switch.

For a server I would not use chaintech for a motherboard. Also I would use ECC instead of NON-ECC memory.

I use the term 'server' lightly here. As may be inferred this is pretty much a box of spare parts. I just needed the mobo to tie it up and the chaintech was reasonably priced and 'in the store' which often makes the purchase decision for us impulsive types.

Really though, it's just going to serve my webpage, and collect my mail. As the box being replaced is K6 650 128MB and almost always 0.00% load I'm sure the chaintech will do fine.
