Unhappy Authentec AES1610 Finguerprint Reader

Hi.

I searched the world looking for a driver for my fingerprint reader but there's nothing capable of making it work. It came on my Packard Bell Easynote laptop. I get a vendor ID, but that's just about it.

Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0b05:1712 ASUSTek Computer, Inc.

Already installed all the PAM stuff, just need the driver. Any ideas?

Thanks a lot

Marco

There are a couple of Authentec devices listed as 'not working' on the linux-USB devices list:

http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/searc...rn=fingerprint

If you click on the links at the right you will see there have been a couple of attempt to write drivers for these things - doesn't look very promising however. I didn't see your model number at all

A fingerprint reader is a biometric device, i.e., used for secure authentication.

It's highly unlikely the manufacturer would release internal details on the operation of the device because while this would help driver writers, it would also help those who wish to compromise the security of the device.

This could also be a cheap gimmicky little thing just to capture a fingerprint image for sending to software. High-security biometrics would be wasted on a simple notebook. Just stuff it under your jacket and walk away. Defeats any protection except encrypted hard disk

I agree! But then again, I bought a laptop with a fingerprint reader that works with it's original OS, Vista. So I HAVE to make it work on my Debian . Call it a matter of pride.

Oh well, if pride is involved...

The links at

http://www.ag-networking.com/

and

http://gkall.hobby.nl/authentec.html

look like they might give a bit of clue. Hope you are good at hardware tho'.

been there, done that.

That's my problem. That's the driver for de AES2510 scanner. I need the driver for the AES1610 , the new model, smaller in size.

Thanks anyway, I'll keep waiting....

Hmm...

That's odd, the AuthenTECH site says it supports "Linux 2.4/2.6."
Maybe we're on to something? I have an ASUS laptop with the same model finger print reader:

I've been looking for a fingerprint reader with its own Linux driver and PAM module for a long time. I'd sure be interested in a turnkey solution.

Yes, Authentec does say it supports Linux Kernel 2.4/2.6! However there is no driver available. I'll post as soon as I get one.
