AudioMax snd card doesn't work on Debian

I have an AudioMAX soundcard that came with my ABIT mb that works correctly under Mandriva and Windows XP, but it won't work on Debian. When KDE starts it gives an error that reads:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (No such device)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

I have alsa and arts installed. I tried running alsaconf, but it tells me that no supported PnP or PCI card is found. Any ideas?

What motherboard do you have? I've got an Abit AV8 and it uses the snd_via82xx module for the onboard sound. Also what release of Debian are you running (output of cat /etc/debian_version) and what is the kernel (output of uname -r).

I have an ABIT AN8-V; uses (a non-pure) NVIDIA chipset, not VIA. I'm running 3.1 Sarge and 2.6.8-11-amd64-generic kernel. (Which you'll probably realize is not an official version, but is "stable"). I that AC'97 has something to do with the card.

Ok you may want to try www.backports.org they have packages built for Sarge. I just checked they have 2.6.16 for a kernel and alsa 1.0.11 which will be way newer that what you're using, while you are it you may as well make sure you grab the -k8 version of the kernel.
