Dear dv502,

Thanks for the suggestions/advice.

You will be surprized to here that presently I am facing no issues with sound card. It's just rocking...

But this is not the end, as what I am curious to know about is that why this hardware is behaving in a weird fashion out of its own? Sometimes delivering a good sound and sometimes as dumb as stone...!!!

Nevertheless, I may consider your your advice regarding LAN card in the near future, but not right now (as of present, I am in tight pocket...)

Anyway, I am facing the same unstability/inconsistency with my internet connection. Is there no way to resolve it currently, or I have to wait till there is any new releases of atl2.ko in the future kernel?

Though, I am not concluding, but frankly speaking, I am getting a notion that UBUNTU has problems with hardware identification.

Can someone suggest me a better distro(s) which have fewest hardware issues (based on my system specification)?

My system configuration:
ASUS P5GC-MX Motherboard
Onboard Attansic Ethernet Card
3rd Party PCI sound card.
1.0 GB DDR2 RAM
NVIDIA Video Card (256 MB)

My purpose of using LINUX will be: MUSIC, VIDEO, EXTENSIVE Net surfing and emailing. NO games at all. But I want a good GUI (I loved the GUI of UBUNTU, it's just wonderful, thousand times ahead of VISTA).

Presently, I am facing another problem, after I have updated the Kernel of UBUNTU. My system is running as sluggish as a snail!!! It's taking 10 minutes to boot! Applications are taking ages to open!!! I have started a new thread on this topic HERE. Please advice.

Sou, there is no support for the L2 chip in any Linux kernel, therefore there will be no new release of atl2.ko. If you want a new atl2.ko, you have to build it yourself from the driver source code or get it from someone kind enough to build it for you.

It is not Ubuntu's fault. There is *no* distro in which you will find support for the L2 ethernet device. Distros don't support hardware; kernels do, and the L2 driver is not part of any existing Linux kernel. The vendor makes the driver source code freely available, but has not submitted the driver for inclusion in the kernel. The driver would need a good bit of cleanup before it would be accepted into the kernel, and the vendor (Atheros) has not yet chosen to go through that process.

Sou, it's possible that your network card and the atl2.ko module are not working hand in hand with each other which might be causing this sluggish internet connection problem. According to member jcliburn, he said the L2
chip is not currently supported in any kernel right now. So, no other other distro is not going to solve your network card problem.

In my arch linux distro, I have a atl1.ko module, so the L1 is currently supported by the kernel, but not L2 which you have. If my distro has this module, most likely you have it too. I not going to guarantee it will work, but give it a try. type this from a terminal

sudo modprobe -a atl1 ( thats a number one at the end )

next, run lsmod | grep atl1 to see if it was loaded. If yes

next test the internet connection. If it is still sluggish, maybe the network card is using the atl2.ko mudule. Run the network configuration wizard again and choose the artl.ko module if listed.

test internet again.

sou, if after trying all the suggestions from me and other members has not resolved your internet connectivity, it's obvious that your network card and the atl2.ko driver is not working in linux. I have no other solution, but to get a used ethernet card since money is tight as you said. If you feel uncomfortable opening the unit to install the card, ask
a friend or family member who has. It is not difficult to do. I believe you can do it.

Good idea, but unfortunately it won't work. I'm the kernel maintainer of the atl1 driver, and I can say with some modicum of authority that the atl1 driver won't work with the L2 chip.

I've contacted the vendor and he tells me they plan to merge the L2 driver into the kernel in 2008.

Thanks for the info jay. I don't know if you done it yet, but you could start a thread with this announcement about the Attansic Ethernet Card
L2 chipset for users like sou1234321.

Anyway, thanks again jay

Call me conservative, but I think we should wait until we actually see the vendor's driver submitted for review before we sound the trumpets.

Dear Friends/advisors,

Please don't let me feel off the track. If the case is that there will be no driver till 2008, does that mean, I have to wait for the net connection till then?

However, I want to ask a question. After, facing some problems, I managed to get a REALTEK Ethernet Card Driver from the scraps of my office go-down. And friends, it's working too! Now, what I want to know is does the LINUX kernel support this ethernet card?

I am eagerly waiting for ur suggestions... (it would be better, if u say yes, otherwise back to the dark lane again... )

Did you mean that you found a card or a driver?

I have not followed this thread in detail, but my sense is that you should simply buy a new card. They are cheap:
http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-LNE100...244273&sr=1-13

(note the used ones starting at just over $3)

It's probably supported, but since you've not told us what type of Realtek card it is, it's a bit hard to say for sure.

The fact that you installed the card and it was automatically recognized by the kernel seems to indicate you have a supported NIC.

Hi sou, like jcliburn says, since it's recognized, and you claim it's working, it sure sounds like it is supported.
To provide us with the model of the card, try sudo lspci or in a console, type su then enter the password, then type lspci. You should see the Realtek device listed there. Copy and paste for us the line with the Realtek device.

Thanks friends.

What I wanted to mean by "it's working" means it is working in Windows XP environment. I am sorry that I was not clear from that aspect.

What exact info do you want to have regarding the Card? The guy who gave me this card said that it's nearly same as that of the Onboard Card of Intel Motherboard D101Ggc series.

Please see above.

OR - You *might* be able to give us some info from Windoze, by going to "Control Panel / System / Device Manager" and looking through the list of installed devices in the machine, and writing down or copying the Realtek device information, model number, and any other information it may give you.

Perferably the Linux information would be better, I figure, as who knows what the Windows OS will tell us.
