Ati Radeon X1550 Problem

I don't know if this has been posted or if i am int the wrong section...
but here we go anyway:

I bought a Ati Radeon X1550 2 weeks ago and hoped that it would work better than my old crappy 32mb Nvidia card.
I checked for which driver i should use and found that its chipset (RV515PRO) is supported by the X1300 driver, but that didn't work.

After that failure i tried with the standard fglrx driver and configured it with both aticonfig --initial and dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, but when the X server is about to start i get the Black Screen of Death. When i check the Xorg.0.Log to see what the problem is, it's empty....

I even tried the binary driver from Ati's site but with the same result.

It seems like the computer freezes when X server is about to load, i have tried everything I've found on google, but nothing have helped me.
I've got the card to run with the Vesa driver but i need the 3d acceleration.....

If anyone got anything that can help me or if you want to know more, just post away....

I run Debian Etch with KDE as desktop, Grub is my boot loader.

I hope i find a solution soon.....

both radeon and radeonhd should work with that card (for the latter 3D acceleration is not available).

In *buntu it is dangerous to install the fgrlx from the ati-site. It is safer to follow the restricted repositories.
Uninstall all of the fgrlx and then start with radeon

radeonhd is experimental (and quite stable), but radeon is not
experimental. It supports R520. Did you follow the instructions for uninstalling the fglrx drivers from the ati site (there is a script in its /usr/share directory)?

try driconf too.

last resort:
http://kanotix.com/files/install-fglrx-debian.sh

Debian Etch is quite old.

You can try upgrading the xorg and xserver to recent versions first and then try radeon or radeonhd in that order.

radeonhd should work fine on your card (2D part). As of now, enabling 3d (experimental) on radeonhd requires some skills.
