ATI Radeon HD5870 linux driver
 

Hi
I consider to buy following laptop:

Asus G73JH-Tz002 Intel Core i7 i7-720QM 8GB 1TB 17,3'' Blu-ray Combo HD5870 NoOS

But for me mandatory requirement is that this fully supports Linux.
Therefore I am a little bit concerned about graphic card:
ATI Radeon HD5870

I prefer nVidia due to 100% linux support, but cannot find a similar model (CPU I7 4 core, 8GB RAM, 1TB 7200 hard disk)
I read that ATI is now included in kernel, but I am not sure it this model is fully supported (all my PC's uses nVidia and I had never any issue with it)

Does anybody have exepience with 'ATI Radeon HD5870' on Linux ?
Does it work properly ?

ati has recently made a bunch of linux drivers that actually work and are easy to install. nvidia and ati are on the same lvl now it seems...

ATI now has good support for the Linux, I run Fedora 12 64 bit and have ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card, connecting primary monitor via HDMI cable and second monitor via DMI. Excellent picture!! Drivers are available from the link below.

Not sure about your Acer best check with Acer before you buy. (anyway why Acer? Dell and IBM have very good range of laptops that fully support Linux)

Why Acer? Its not Acer. Its ASUS which makes difference for me (I would rather not buy Acer).
Maybe I will consider this as an option:
EliteBook 8540w Mobile (WD929EA)
but I see following disadvantages
- price (+ 30%...though considering MS software is maybe 20% more expensive)
- weaker processor (only i7-620M see here: http://www.intel.com/products/proces...ifications.htm)
- smaller disk (only 0,5TB)
Advantages:
- full support for SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 :-)
- port eSATA ( I have two external disk having this port)..this might be important because in most cases my virtual machines have problems due to IO's. If I can run them from external disk, then I solve this problem.
- light compared to ASUS (less than 3kg)
- NVidia card which fully supports Linux (I never had a problem with this card on LINUX)


The laptop I found meets my needs and is available to buy in Poland.
My requirements are:
- strong 4 core CPU ...or very good 2 core
- as much RAM as possible
- at least 500GB disk (but prefer 750+)
- known brand
- reasonable price
- possible to install Linux
- without OS or with Linux (I do not buy MS software with hardware. If I need any software that my company have a deal (employee program) with MS that I can buy for very cheap price).

I do not need laptop for games, because the only games I sometimes play is Chess, GNUGo, Duke3D or Shadow Warrior.
I need mobile solution as consultant (this is why I consider laptop). I want to run some Virtual machines on it.

I think I found a right choice:
ASUS G51JX-SZ180X-8 i7-720QM/8192/500/Blu-Ray
It has nVidia graphic card which I know is fully supported under Linux.
It has 8GB SODIMM DDRAM3, 1333 MHz, and most important it has 4 core processor Intel Core i7-720QM (1,60 GHz to 2,80 GHz with Turbo Boost, 6MB).
My only concern for the moment is full support for virtualization (I think vmware does not support i7-720QM for VMware Server), but soon or later they will support it.
