ATI Radeon 9600
 

Final question before i install mandrake.

I have a radeon 9600 pro, on the ati website they have linux drivers for it :

Im installing Mandrake 10.1 and im just making sure them drivers will work on it, and which set do i need? Theres a few.

For the stories that I've heard about ati drivers, the installation and performance will be pretty much the same as your nickname :). If you are going to game with Linux, you better off getting a nvidia. For the 2D part it's quite good with ATI generic drivers though. Again, if you are gaming, the very best is to keep a dual boot system with Windows anyway :)

I dont play games alot, so its not really worth keeping XP on here, but i do play some games so i need the drivers to i guess.

Ild rather not dual boot with xp, i wanna get rid of it 100% ... lol

Anyone got some experience with these drivers?

My 2 cents: After multiple wrestling sessions with ATI drivers, at least in my experience they are not as user-friendly as they could be. To summarize, I've had mixed results with them (meaning that the installation seemed to be successful, and although my FPS score did increase, it's not nearly as high as it seems it should be) Note however that my installation attempts were done last year, and were done manually on a different distro (Slack) and on an older kernel (2.4.x) Also, it's possible that other distros may have customized drivers that would install without so much friction as I experienced, or that newer/better ATI drivers have been released since that time. Overall, I'd say that while ATI cards are screamers under Windows, getting them supported under Linux may take some work, so be prepared.

If you do a Search here at LQ and/elsewhere you can find a number of ATI driver how-to's, and clearly some folks have had a lot of success with them. Good luck with it either way -- J.W.

LOL :). ghehe. It's said to hear that ATI drivers ain't great in Linux. Currently, I found ATI cards to be a much better card for the money and less power hungry then Nvidia's for Windows. Hopefully the drivers will get better anytime soon... Anyway, sometime next month I've decided to get an ATI card, so most likely this is a fight I will have in Linux too :)
