ATI Mobility 9700 issue on fedora core 2

hi m8s. I am using fedora core on my laptop which is equipped with the ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 64MB graphics card. I've searched for the best drivers recommended by the people who know a little more of linux than me :D and i've installed the fglrx ati drivers. i've installed the driver (which comes in RPM) following the steps supplied by the site, still i can't get my hardware acceleration to work in X  ...
By the way i got the drivers from the ATI site.

When i run the "glxgears" command , i get the following output :
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
702 frames in 5.0 seconds = 140.400 FPS
1320 frames in 5.0 seconds = 264.000 FPS

As U can see, its a quite low framerate... and when i run the game "Chromium" (which is 3d accelerated i think) , it looks like a slideshow.

L8er m8s.
