ATI IXP: No sound since kernel 2.6.7 ?

Greetings!

I have an annoying problem with the sound chip on my laptop. I have been using the snd-atiixp kernel module (alsa) on quite a few different 2.6.x kernels without any problem. Then 2.6.7 came out and now when alsa tries to load the module, i hear a short *click* and the sound card won't get initialized. It makes no difference whether I compile it as a module or into the kernel. When I reboot to another 2.6 kernel (any older version really) it works perfectly again. I remember getting some error in syslog that didn't tell me anything useful; I don't have it available right now but I will post it tomorrow.

Google didn't reveal anything except for one post on what was apparently an alsa development mailing list. It said something about the new snd-atiixp module having problems when detecting the ATI modem that is also in the chipset and thus aborting the sound card detection. There was some code listed below but i diff'ed it against my atiixp.c and it was identical. So no fix. =(

Has anyone had the same problem and knows a fix? Or am I the only one having this problem?

problem posted in the gentoo forums:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=224965

I just bought a compaq presario r3128rs laptop...and I can't get my sound working at all. lspci says that it's a ATI IXP AC97 or something. I'm using kernel 2.6.8, and I've even tried compiling every single alsa pci driver into the kernel, but I'm still getting the same error and no sound.

Is this a bug in the kernel?

configuring the sound card can be a major pain in the ass. Your best bet is to try out OSS drivers:
