ATI hardware acceleration problem

I have been trying to do this for about 4 weeks now..and have tried multiple instructions found on the net..I hope someone can help.

My system is SuSe 10.2 with the 2.6 default kernel. I used the latest
package from ATI the installer built a custom module, and I used rpm
to install it. I see the following problems and don't know what else
to do, other than uninstall it and try again.
This is from my boot log:
4>fglrx: no version for "struct_module" found: kernel tainted.
<4>fglrx: module license 'Proprietary. (C) 2002 - ATI Technologies, Starnberg, GERMANY' taints kernel.

I used the latest package from ATI
That can be a problem to begin with - you should have been using the openSUSE package via YaST. Which ATI card is this? What was the name of this "latest" package?

Quote:

fglrx: no version for "struct_module" found: kernel tainted.
... this means that fglrx is not gpl compliant. But you knew that. I'm going to presume that you know the issues and move on.

openSUSE 10.2 has default 2.6.18.2 kernel ... it is important that the driver you downloaded was compatible with this and that you have the kernel headers installed correctly. Double check.

Have you tried fglrxconfig to set up xorg.conf?

mpc 12-24-2007 04:49 AM

I've used fglrx config..it is now called aticonfig/also tried sax2 to configure it. The ATI package is 8.42.3.
The card is a sapphire 9600 it is the rv350 chipset..The ATI installer built a custom module instead of using a pre-configured binary. To the best of my knowledge the kernel sources are installed correctly..I did have to change one symlink in the lib/modules directory. It was pointing to src/linux-obj and would not compile a driver package. When I changed the link to the src/linux it seemed to compile a driver package. Could this be the basis of the problem??source incorrectly installed? There is only one file in my obj directory, it is called module symvers. I had to install the source package after the fact as I only
had CDs 1-3. It is the correct version though.

Simon Bridge 12-24-2007 09:14 AM

RV350 chipset has hardware dri through the free "radeon" driver available in the kernel. Why are you not using that?

The fglrx driver is binary only... otherwise ATI would have a problem with people hacking it. Though IIRC there are open source things as well in the driver package.

It will have created a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf, which is the next thing I need to see.

mpc 12-26-2007 12:54 AM

I was under the impression that the radeon driver that was included did not support hardware acceleration due to ATI
not being able to release some proprietary info....noob thing I guess...forgot what I was reading that said that.
I have the mesa stuff installed because the ATI driver needed that...could be this whole excersize was pointless.
The hardware acceleration was all I was after. Anyway here is my xorg file. I appreciate all your trouble. I have
learned a few things doing all this so all is not wasted!

From the radeon driver man page...
Code:

radeon is an Xorg driver for ATI RADEON based video cards.  It contains
full support for 8, 15, 16 and 24 bit pixel  depths,  dual-head  setup,
flat  panel,  hardware 2D acceleration, hardware 3D acceleration, hard‐
ware cursor, XV extension, and the Xinerama extension.

My emphasis.

For a long time, the specs for legacy radeon cards have been released to the community. This means that older cards usually have 3D acceleration. There was some indication that specs for cards used in x-boxes would not be released... don't know about that. But it is always worth trying the FOSS options first.

As for the rest:
http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?...=&#entry217457
... for openSUSE 10.3 (rest of the thread is good too.

You don't need glx - disable and remove. Recent fglrx drivers have aiglx support.
The fglrx driver really needs to come from an official SUSE source... the ATI version is just unpredictable.

Server flags needs to turn AIGLX on.
Extensions needs to make damage and composite "true"

And you gotta whitelist the driver.

I'd also want to comment out most of the driver options.
But really - try the radeon driver to start with.

mpc 12-29-2007 09:23 PM

nearly resolved

The oss driver would not work..but the following did:
I used yast to install the fglrx driver..it is an older version I believe,
I made the suggested adjustments to the xorg file and it worked
without a problem. I enabled XGL using the supplied graphical tool and
things appear to be pretty much in order. I am getting one message
that I don't understand from fglrxinfo.

Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI RADEON 9600 Series
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (2.0.6458 (8.36.5))

Everthing seems to work correctly so I'm not sure why it is reporting
DRI missing message...anyone with ideas?

You see?! Since you used the installer from ATI, you may now have a broken X system. Latest != best.

Check your framerate in glxgears.

You need to disable the composite extension I suspect.
