ATI drivers and Display Port

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 (kernel 2.6) and will soon be upgrading to Ubuntu 8.10.

I am building a new system and am considering buying a Dell 2709W 27" monitor which has Display Port input capabilities. I am also looking at the Palit Radeon HD4670 video card which has Display Port output.

ATI has a Linux version driver for this card but I am not sure whether it supports the Display Port protocol. I asked at ATI and all they said was their Linux driver comes "as is", which wasn't very helpful.

Has anyone here had experience with Display Port capable monitors (I think Dell is the only producer so far), and does anyone know if the ATI driver for Linux actually works with Display Port? I don't want to spend a ton of money for something that won't work under Linux.

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Bob
