ATI Driver troubles slackware 9.1

I'm back! :D

This time, however, I am having some issues with my Radeon drivers.

I followed this thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...312#post517312

I ran fglrxconfig fine, I configured it how I think it was supposed to go. However, my outcome in glxgears is horrible:

Code:

1293 frames in 5.0 seconds = 258.600 FPS
1300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 260.000 FPS
1200 frames in 5.0 seconds = 240.000 FPS
1300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 260.000 FPS

This is my results with lsmod:

Code:

Module                  Size  Used by    Tainted: P
fglrx                172552  0
agpgart                39576  0  (unused)

I would copy my XF86Config-4 file but I don't know how to copy under pico :)

Oh yes, and this is what I get when I run fglrxinfo:
Code:

display: :0.0  screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.3 Mesa 4.0.4

And that definitly isn't right, since i am running an ATI Radeon 8500 :)

Thanks in advance for any help - it is all highly appreciated...

Bump ^

An answer is greatly appreciated :)

kryptobs2000 12-18-2003 02:12 PM

cd to /lib/modules/fglrx/mod_install
then run './make.sh'
cd to /lib/modules/fglrx
then run './make_install.sh'
then run fglrxinfo to see if it's how it should be.

I got another question tho. Mine still runs slow, tho alot better I've gotten this far. But the bitmap flag and the morphgl run about 10fps, along with some other screensavers, havn't tested any games, but I'm sure I wouldn't have any luck, What else do I need to do?

Specs:
Radeon 9700 Pro
Asus a7s333
256 pc 2700
sb16 pci
Slackware 9.0

I've recompiled my Kernel, but didn't change but a few things, mainly the proc. type and disabled a few unnecesary things.

Aman9090 12-18-2003 03:58 PM

Code:

- trying a sample load of the kernel module
Warning: loading /lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.o will taint the kernel: non-GPL license - Proprietary. (C) 2002 - ATI Technologies, Starnberg, GERMANY
See http://www.tux.org/lkml/#export-tainted for information about tainted modules
Module fglrx loaded, with warnings

I got that when I did ./make_install.sh

I told you, I followed the instructions of that forum. I didn't know re-doing that was going to fux0r the kernel :D

So umm... how do i solve that problem now?

Help appreciated.

kryptobs2000 12-18-2003 04:09 PM

I got that same error lol. I figured it didn't matter. If you check the fglrxinfo it'll say what it's supposed to lol. I forgot about that tho, maybe thats why I get all the slowdown. I'm guessing you have to uninstall w/e driver was there before, but I'm pretty new to linux, so I don't know how to do that, hoping someone else could help us out here.

Aman9090 12-18-2003 04:12 PM

Nevermind, I actually just got it working. No longer does it do that when I modprobe fglrx and agpgart. However, I am still having some problemos.

when I lsmod, it shows agpgart and fglrx as being used by '0' - meaning SOMETHING is not working. What the hell did I do?

Sorry about the slopiness, but that's it right now...

kryptobs2000 12-18-2003 04:23 PM

I'm not sure... the config looks fine to me, Whats ur specs jw, and are the screen savers running any better than they were before?

Aman9090 12-18-2003 04:48 PM

I dont run screensavers

glxgears is running worse than it did when i installed these drivers the first time - anyone have an idea?

kryptobs2000 12-18-2003 05:07 PM

oh, well I guess you prob. can't run most of the screensavers, glxgears runs pefectly fine for me. My performance still sucks though.

Aman9090 12-18-2003 05:56 PM

Read above! I already posted my results above, and it is even lower for me now!

I'd like to play games by tomorrow, so all help is appreciated.

Aman9090 12-19-2003 10:22 PM

Hey guys - I still need help!

Needed to bump this because it was on the second page of the results..

All help, again, is highly appreciated. Thanks for everyone's time and thanks in advance for any more peoples' time :)

If you have kernel 2.4.x, Xfree 4.3 and an Radeon 8500, then try the builtin driver instead of atis fglrx.

Add this to your XF86config and leave your fglrx entry as it is..
Code:

Section "Device"
    Identifier  "Radeon"
    VendorName  "ATI"
    Driver      "radeon"
    Option      "AGPMode" "4"
EndSection

Then, change the Device in the Screen0 Section.. f.e.
Code:

Section "Screen"
    Identifier  "Screen0"
    #Device      "ATI Graphics Adapter"
    Device      "Radeon"
    Monitor    "Monitor0"
...

This worked perfect for me with the 2.4.x kernel.. But now that I updated to 2.6.0 I have the same shitty results as you have with glxgrears.
btw. Any help in "my" thread is appreciated. :-)

Aman9090 12-20-2003 05:24 PM

what driver should I use? this is what my section looks like right now - I entered it according to the information above..

Code:

# Standard VGA Device:

 #Section "Device"
 # Identifier  "Radeon"
 # VendorName  "ATI"
 # Option      "AGPMode" "4"

# The chipset line is optional in most cases.  It can be used to override
# the driver's chipset detection, and should not normally be specified.

    #Chipset    "8500"

# The Driver line must be present.  When using run-time loadable driver
# modules, this line instructs the server to load the specified driver
# module.  Even when not using loadable driver modules, this line
# indicates which driver should interpret the information in this section.

  # Driver      "radeonfb"
# The BusID line is used to specify which of possibly multiple devices
# this section is intended for.  When this line isn't present, a device
# section can only match up with the primary video device.  For PCI
# devices a line like the following could be used.  This line should not
# normally be included unless there is more than one video device
# installed.

  # BusID      "PCI:0:10:0"

    #VideoRam    256

  # Clocks      25.2 28.3

    # EndSection

I can't startx with that configuration uncommented - it gives me errors. When I modprobe radeonfb, it gives me errors.

Thanks for your help so far, I have a good feeling once I get this solved i will get it to work :) thanks a bunch.

^ Bumpy bump bumparoo! :D

Aman9090 12-21-2003 02:24 PM

Ok..

I got somewhat further with this.

Right now, I have this set up:

Code:

# Standard VGA Device:

 Section "Device"
  Identifier  "Radeon"
  VendorName  "ATI"
  Option      "AGPMode" "4"

# The chipset line is optional in most cases.  It can be used to override
# the driver's chipset detection, and should not normally be specified.

    #Chipset    "8500"

# The Driver line must be present.  When using run-time loadable driver
# modules, this line instructs the server to load the specified driver
# module.  Even when not using loadable driver modules, this line
# indicates which driver should interpret the information in this section.

  Driver      "radeon"
# The BusID line is used to specify which of possibly multiple devices
# this section is intended for.  When this line isn't present, a device
# section can only match up with the primary video device.  For PCI
# devices a line like the following could be used.  This line should not
# normally be included unless there is more than one video device
# installed.

  # BusID      "PCI:0:10:0"

  #VideoRam    256

    #Clocks      25.2 28.3

    EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier  "Screen0"
  Device      "ATI Graphics Adapter"
 #  Device      "Radeon"
    Monitor      "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    #Option "backingstore"

However, when I uncomment the
Code:

# Device "Radeon"
line under the Screen section and startx, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then the computer restarts on its own.

Thanks for all the help, this is the last peice I think! :)

When I ran glxgears with the xf86config _exactly_ how i listed it above, I got much better results (more frames in the 300s range) but I would like to get the expected performance (1000s?). Thanks again, all help is greatly appreciated!

skank 12-22-2003 09:44 AM

Aman9090: i've got the EXACT same problem as you do... i'm running slack 9.1 on nforce2, r9700. the problem is similar to the detail. if i use the integrated driver "radeon" the machine reboots... there must be a solution to this. thanks for the help. regards, skank.

DaOne 12-22-2003 01:34 PM

I am afraid that those of us using the 9700 will need to wait for the new ATI driver release. From what I understand, some distros don't have this issue after patching their kernel. Anyway, ATI should be releasing the new drivers any day now.

skank 12-22-2003 02:30 PM

i guess it wont hurt to wait... i don't actually need opengl support that bad... but having something i'm not taking advantage of is a bit frustrating (even if it's only a nice gl screensaver ;))

Aman9090 12-22-2003 04:05 PM

well what about for me? I am running a radeon 8500 ... Is there any sollution?

I am starting a new thread for this in the Slackware section - this one ahs been muched up with lots of replies and my constant bumping :) I will make a similarly-titled thread in there so check over there!

DaOne 12-22-2003 04:48 PM

9700 Pro fix...

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...231#post664231

And Aman...I believe they discuss a fix for the 8500 in the same thread.
