ATI driver problem

Hi, i have a ATI Radeon 9800 SE and im running Debain unstable. I installed the drivers the way that ATI said to and the way that this guide tells me to:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...icle&artid=212

They installed without any errors but I went to go play unreal tournament 2004 and i got this error:

"WARNING: ALC_EXT_capture is subject to change!
Couldn't set video mode: Couldn't find matching GLX visual

History:

Exiting due to error"

so I checked if the driver was working correctly with fglrxinfo and it came up with:

"display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.3 Mesa 4.0.4"

according to ATI, "If the output reads OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc. then your ATI drivers are installed and configured correctly.

Otherwise, if fglrxinfo indicates that MESA Indirect (software) Rendering is being used, then you may want to repeat the steps listed above, while paying careful attention to the following:"

Having gone through this install many times, i find it beyond me and look for any help i can get. I am new to linux so if you could help me by telling me how to do all the steps needed i would really be greatful

Are you sure you got no warnings or error messages during the installation? Because if you have set it up correctly then the drivers should work.

Post the output of the messages you got during the installation here.

Btw. were your kernel sources installed with your distro when you installed the fglrx drivers? If not then you must install the kernel source before installing the package.

There are plenty of threads that have already discussed this issue in detail. Just do a search for ATI Radeon and you'll find out what you need: more detailed instructions.

Ok, its late for me so sorry if i dont make any sence.

"Post the output of the messages you got during the installation here."

you want the install as in the .deb file install or the configuring install? and if it is the configuring install you want the xfree file that it made after it was setup?

No, the kernel source wasnt in the distro and i dont know how to install it. i have downloaded the source via apt-get but i dont know what to do after that.

here is the whole install i had:

(Reading database ... 85418 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace fglrx 4.3.0-4.12 (using fglrx_4.3.0-4.12_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement fglrx ...
Setting up fglrx (4.3.0-4.12) ...

then right after setup it brought my back to the command prompted
