ATI AIW 8500DV, crashes with 'no screens found' when using radeon module.

I've been wrestling with this for a couple months now. RH9 will not start X, even during the installation. I have to run a text installation, then change to the vesa module before X will start. I have tried recompiling the 2.4.24 kernel and modules, still no dice. Tries Gatos, same results. Each time it tells me 'no screens found'. I've looked at the logs from the successful vesa loads and the failed radeon loads and what appears to be happening is that the settings for the montior are ignored and default values (see are after DDC loads) which are outside of the range of my monitor are being used instead. I have tried removing the dri module load (and even all entries in the Modules section) with the same results.

Here is my current config file and lastest log.

(I initially posted the config file and log in three posts but deleted them and just uploaded to the following urls... no, I'm not talking to myself :) )

XF86Config
XFree86.0.log

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I don't feel so bad now that I've stumped everyone else... :)

Try this how-to

http://www.linux-gamers.net/modules/...p?articleid=22

it helped for me.
maybe will for u too

and this is my monitor section

Identifier "Monitor0"
HorizSync 30-111
VertRefresh 50-160
Option "DPMS"

Thanks, the ATI drivers do work, but unfortunately do not support the TV Tuner for the 8500DV yet. I was actually interested in getting the gatos modules working so I can have as close to full functionallity as possible. I'm not much of a gamer so the 3D acceleration alone doesn't do me much good.

Thanks again,

Is that floating 0 after 'screen' for real?

RHELL 02-12-2004 08:46 PM

Sorry, I'm referring to the floating 0 in this section of XF86Config:

>Section "ServerLayout"
> Identifier "Default Layout"
> Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
> InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
> InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
>EndSection

Yes, it is. That's there from the initial installation. It works fine with the vesa driver. Does it really make a difference? I will try removing it, but I don't think it will change anything.

The one thing that I'd like to point out again is that the RH9 installation fails right after running anaconda and loading the radeon module, unless I specifiy text installation. I then need to change the XF86Config from radeon to vesa before X will start.

....

Incase it matters, my motheboard chipset is KT400.

I'm not an RH9 guy, DON'T take it out on my account. I have questions, not answers.
Now, since it still looks funny to me, could there be nonzero values that aren't being returned from the device?
Anything smelly in the install log?

metagore 02-13-2004 06:36 AM

Yep, the 0's did look odd to me too. I couldn't find anything in the XFree86 docs that would indicate why those values would be entered there so I removed them. It didn't effect it at all, of course.

I did find out a little more about this. The failure is comming during when ddcprobe runs while using the radeon module(s). The values that are being returned are 'null'. If I use the vesa module it will return the correct values. So it appears that the issue may be a combination of the radeon module and my monitor, a Samsung SyncMaster 955DF.

... and the saga continues :)

I have since upgraded the kernel to 2.6.2. Still had the same issue with both the default radeon module and the gatos module.

It appears as though I'm doomed on this one. I'll keep up the post if anything changes.

Still fighting this battle.

I have tried multiple distros (Redhat/Fedora, Mandrake, Slackware) and am currently running Slackware 9.1 with 2.6.4. Each has the same issues so I don't think this is a distro specific issue.

Also, because I don't really find any one else having this same issue I believe it to be specific to my configuration.

Gigabyte G-7VAXP
ATI Radeon 8500DV
Samsung SyncMaster 955DF

Those are all the components that should affect my video subsystem. The only other components in my system are drives.

maybe you could try the ATI fglrx driver?

metagore 03-17-2004 01:22 PM

That was mentioned earlier in this thread. The ATI driver works fine.

But that doesn't help the TV Tuner work. I could really care less whether I have decent 3d acceleration as long as the tuner works.
