ATI 9700 Radeon AIW 3d Acceleration

Yes, I did a search.

I am using SUSE 9.2 pro, and have an ATI 9700 Radeon AIW video card. My system uses X.org 6.8. I am trying to get my card setup so that it can use 3d acceleration. I have looked on the ATI site, but I didn't see any drivers other than the Xfree86 (4.2, 4.3 and 4.4) drivers. When I tried installing them, it tanked my system (fortunately I had backed up the applicable directory). The current driver that is installed (came with the distro) says that the 3d acceleration can't be used.

I would greatly appreciate any help that someone could offer to get my system running better.

Thanks.
